This dissertation looks at the historical, cultural, sociological, political and religious conditions that lead to the unilateral interruption, by the Brazilian church, of the partnership agreement of joint mission between the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPIB) and the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America PC (USA). The alleged decision to interrupt the agreement was due to the decision taken by the American church body to fully integrate in the life of the church, individuals who were LGBTQs, both to the ordained/consecrated ministry as well as allowing these individual to marry forming same sex couples. These decisions on the part of the American denomination were totally unacceptable to the Brazilian partnered church. Although both of this churches shared the same historical origins from the Calvinist tradition from the protestant Reformation, both shared the same form of church polity, both shared the same theological influences from Karl Barth’s neo-orthodoxy, they, nevertheless came to very different understandings concerning LGBT related issues. But why? The truth is that the pathways taken and walked by these two similar denominations were not as similar as one might think. Their individual history in the societies they are part of, is much different just because the societies are very different, and are in different stages of development concerning, for example civil rights issues, which evokes different reactions and responses from their membership, if compared, in our case, on LGBTQ issues. For the same issues the responses are practically opposed. This is the dynamics that this dissertation proposes to analyze.
