This thesis proposes to investigate the moral and ethical institutional memory of the Methodist Church [of Brazil] between 1928-1934 and 1979-1982, based on texts from the Jornal Expositor Cristão, the denomination's official press organ in Brazil, as well as the various magazines of social groups and Christian education. Our hypothesis is that, at the core of the moral and ethical articulation, there is empirical evidence that legitimizes the constitution of a narrative identity, while establishing a regulatory self-awareness for the life and mission of the Methodist Church within Brazilian society. The proposed thesis is justified by the absence of a broad and more technical analysis of the moral and ethical field presented by the institutional memory of this church. Its originality lies in the analysis of the themes found according to their focus on different scopes or spheres (personal, institutional and social) and in the distinct ways applied (deontological, teleological, of the person and of the situation), as well as their variations. As a theoretical framework for the conceptions of memory and institutional memory, we chose M. Halbwachs and I. Thiesen; as a theoretical framework for understanding the fields of morality and ethics, we started from classic books by J. Bentham; J. Stuart Mill, I. Kant, M. Weber and J. Fletcher, based on their observation in the theological ethics available in the library of the Faculty of Theology of the Methodist Church and also in the ethics written by the Methodists J. Miguez Bonino, P. Velasques Filho, R. H. May and H. Renders. As a method, we first clarified our understanding of institutional memory and then investigated the ethical literature available in the aforementioned library. Thus, by clarifying both the moments of this reflection in each indicated period, as well as the tendencies available, we proceeded from the survey of the themes found through the analysis of the scopes and spheres contemplated in the modes of ethical moral reasoning used. We conclude that the moral and ethical institutional identity, projected by institutional memory, integrated a robust vision of promoting well-being in society, under analysis of the mutual impact between scopes and spheres based on the var0ied use of modes, including a type of anticipation of the situational mode through the emphasis on the ethics of love.
