Pela liberdade religiosa e contra a perseguição ao cristianismo: contradições e particularidades do advocacy transnacional de defesa da igreja perseguida

Abstract

O propósito deste trabalho é investigar a militância transnacional contra a perseguição ao Cristianismo no período pós-Guerra Fria. Para isso, adotamos uma abordagem interdisciplinar, utilizando teorias do campo das Relações Internacionais para analisar o fenômeno religioso em questão. Dialogamos também com Estudos da Religião e Ciências Sociais. Nos propomos a problematizar como o fenômeno da perseguição religiosa ao Cristianismo é interpretado na contemporaneidade, e como isso estimula o surgimento de movimentos ativistas. Os resultados da pesquisa são apresentados em três capítulos. No primeiro capítulo, desenvolvemos o aparato teórico utilizado na pesquisa, apresentamos a teoria construtivista pós-positivista, discutimos as relações possíveis entre Relações Internacionais e Ciências da Religião, e exploramos o conceito de redes transnacionais de advocacy. No capítulo seguinte, analisamos o desenvolvimento da luta contemporânea pela liberdade religiosa e contra a perseguição através do desenvolvimento de um breve panorama histórico dessa militância. Objetivamos compreender o impacto das transformações após a Guerra Fria na luta pela liberdade religiosa e discutimos sua ressignificação e crescimento na ordem multipolar. Discutimos a hipótese do imaginário do martírio como fio condutor dessa causa, e analisamos a única organização da militância transnacional contra a perseguição ao Cristianismo que atua no Brasil, a Portas Abertas. No último capítulo, analisamos os impactos do discurso dessa militância no século XXI. Apresentamos seus argumentos teológicos, problematizamos a instrumentalização da linguagem da liberdade religiosa e o suposto status do Cristianismo de religião mais perseguida do mundo na atualidade. Finalizamos discutindo as implicações desse ativismo sobre a política e sobre sujeitos – religiosos ou não.The purpose of this paper is to investigate the transnational activism against the persecution of Christianity in the post-Cold War period. For this, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach, using theories of the field of International Relations to analyze the religious phenomenon in question. We also dialogue with Studies of Religion and Social Sciences. We propose to question how the phenomenon of religious persecution of Christianity is interpreted in contemporary times, and how this stimulates the emergence of activist movements. The research results are presented in three chapters. In the first chapter, we developed the theoretical apparatus used in the research, introduced the postpositivist constructivist theory, discussed the possible relations between International Relations and Religious Studies, and explored the concept of transnational advocacy networks. In the next chapter, we analyze the development of the contemporary combat for religious freedom and against persecution by developing a brief historical overview of this militancy. We aim to understand the impact of post-Cold War transformations on the religious freedom advocacy and discuss their resignification and growth in the multipolar order. We discuss the hypothesis of the imagery of martyrdom as the guiding thread of this cause, and analyze the only organization of transnational advocacy against the persecution of Christianity that operates in Brazil. In the last chapter, we analyze the impacts of the discourse of this advocacy in the 21st century. We present its theological arguments, problematize the instrumentalization of the language of religious freedom, and the supposed status of Christianity as the most persecuted religion in the world today. We conclude by discussing the implications of this activism on politics and on subjects – religious or not.
