Every practitioner of the Buddhist religion has as its main and soteriological objective the cessation of all afflictive roots and thus enter the state of a Buddha, a completely mature state. But to achieve this goal, the Geluk Buddhist tradition, founded by Lama Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa, advises and teaches that it is necessary to have a qualified guru accompanying the student, giving teachings, instructions, training, counseling, etc., all the way to the nirvāṇa. In the same way, the Christian tradition, according to Saint Thomas Aquinas, places the teacher in an extremely important position to guide the student to discover the light of intellect given by God. Therefore, the research will verify what the characteristics of a qualified master are, the real importance of this relationship and what it should be like. To assist, the research will address Freud's concepts of transference and countertransference, with the aim of dialoguing with other areas of science, in addition to addressing possible problems in this master-student relationship. The second part of the research will focus on understanding what the soteriological objective of Geluk Buddhism means and is about, drawing on classic texts from the tradition together with contemporary commentaries by the XIV Dalai Lama. Finally, the research will analyze the concept of trust in the Geluk Buddhist and Christian traditions according to Saint Thomas Aquinas, and how this process of relationship between master and student occurs.
