Análise contrastiva das traduções de antropônimos e topônimos presentes em The Lord of the Rings: the fellowship of the ring, de J. R. R. Tolkien, para o português brasileiro e europeu

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe uma análise contrastiva das traduções de antropônimos e topônimos presentes nos quatro primeiros capítulos de The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), de J. R. R. Tolkien, para o português brasileiro (2000) e para o português europeu (1981). O livro narra as aventuras de Frodo Baggins em sua jornada para destruir o Um Anel, artefato mágico e maléfico que é desesperadamente procurado por seu criador, Sauron, e cujo poder pode destruir Middle-Earth, mundo fantástico onde se passa a história. O objetivo da análise proposta é, considerando as orientações deixadas por Tolkien a tradutores, verificar se há correspondência nas traduções de antropônimos e topônimos com as escolhas lexicais do original no que se refere à sua origem e estrutura. A análise está fundamentada nas reflexões de Arrojo (1993; 2007) e Venuti (1996; 2002; 2004), representantes, segundo Mittmann (2003), da chamada perspectiva contestadora da tradução. Foram selecionados para o cotejo 26 termos comentados por Tolkien em seu guia de orientações para tradutores. Esses termos, no original e nas duas traduções, estão dispostos em tabelas, com os respectivos comentários analíticos. Foi constatado que a principal solução encontrada pela tradução para o português brasileiro foi a recriação dos termos no aspecto morfológico e lexical, mas mantendo, em geral, o aspecto semântico do original; para o português europeu, foi realizada uma tradução mais literal, assim como alguns termos foram mantidos como no original.

This study proposes a contrastive analysis of anthroponyms and toponyms in translations into Brazilian and European Portuguese of four chapters of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), by J. R. R. Tolkien. The plot is about the journey of Frodo Baggins in order to destroy the One Ring, a magical and evil artifact that is searched for Sauron, its creator, and which has power to destroy the Middle-Earth, a fantastic world where the story takes place. The aim of the proposed analysis is to verify the presence of correspondence with the lexical choices of the original text in both anthroponyms and toponyms translations, regarding its origin and structure, considering the guide written by Tolkien to translators. The theoretical framework is based on Arrojo (1993; 2007) and Venuti (1996; 2002; 2004), theorists who represent, according to Mittmann (2003), alternative theories regarding translation. We have chosen 26 terms to compose the analysis. The terms are shown in tables, followed by their respective analytical comments. It has been observed that the main solution found by the translation to Brazilian Portuguese was create the terms again in its morphological and lexical aspect, while the original semantic aspect was maintained; to European Portuguese, it was made a more literal translation, as well as some terms were kept as in the original.
