Comunicação, arte e memória: representação estética do conflito Israel-Palestina no The Walled Off Hotel, de Banksy

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo entender como o artista britânico Banksy potencializa o The Wallled Off Hotel como um ambiente comunicacional que articula memória, arte ativista e experiência estética para representar o conflito Israel-Palestina. Pensado como mídia, o hotel é um espaço narrativo onde esses três pilares são os responsáveis pela geração de sentidos, partilha de significados e criação de vínculos comunicacionais no ambiente por meio da linguagem artística. A pesquisa centra-se em autores que estudam as narrativas históricas do conflito Israel-Palestina, como: Chapman (2017), Said (2012), Terra (2003), Pappe (2007) e Morin (2011); o campo da memória, como: Lotman (1981, 1998), Ricoeur (1994, 2012), Benjamin (1987), Gagnebin (2006), Barbosa (2017), Pollak (1989), Nora (1993), Huyssen (2000, 2001) e Hall (1998, 2003, 2005); a arte ativista e a experiência estético-política, como: Dewey (1949), Gumbrecht (2006, 2010), Rancière (2009), Mesquita (2011), Cardoso Filho (2011) e Foletto (2011). Além disso, o hotel é um texto cultural ─ espaço semiótico ─ onde é possível estabelecer trocas informacionais entre os sistemas sígnicos dos textos artísticos que o compõem. A decodificação e interpretação dos textos artísticos são guiadas pelos conceitos da Semiótica da Cultura (LOTMAN, 1978, 1990, 1996, 1998, 2000) e as noções de Representação (HALL, 2016). Para finalizar, as ideias da Ecologia da Comunicação (BAITELLO, 2010; MENEZES, 2016) nos permitem entender o funcionamento dos processos comunicacionais estabelecidos nos ambientes do hotel. O The Walled Off Hotel, inaugurado em 2017 em Belém na Palestina, celebra o marco de 100 anos da assinatura da Declaração de Balfour. O hotel temático é um meio de expressão e espaço de interação, capaz de possibilitar aos hóspedes/visitantes a experiência de se hospedarem em uma obra de arte.

This dissertation aims to understand how the British artist Banksy potentiates The Walled Off Hotel as a communicational environment that articulates memory, activist art and aesthetic experience to represent the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Conceived as media, the hotel is a narrative space where these three axes are responsible for generating senses, sharing meanings and creating communicational bonds in the environment through artistic language. The research focuses on authors who study the historical narratives of Israeli-Palestine conflict, such as: Chapman (2017), Said (2012), Terra (2003), Pappe (2007) e Morin (2011); the field of memory, such as: Lotman (1981, 1998), Ricoeur (1994, 2012), Benjamin (1987), Gagnebin (2006), Barbosa (2017), Pollak (1989), Nora (1993), Huyssen (2000, 2001) e Hall (1998, 2003, 2005); activist art and aesthetic-political experience, such as: Dewey (1949); Gumbrecht (2006, 2010); Rancière (2009), Mesquita (2011), Cardoso Filho (2011) and Foletto (2011). In addition, the hotel is a cultural text ─ semiotic space ─ where it is possible to establish informational exchanges between the sign systems of the artistic texts that compose it. The decoding and interpretation of the artistic texts are guided by concepts of Semiotics of Culture (LOTMAN, 1978, 1990, 1996, 1998, 2000) and the notions of Representation (HALL, 2016). Finally, the ideas of Communication Ecology (BAITELLO, 2010; MENEZES, 2016) allow us to understand the functioning of the communication processes established in the hotel spaces. The Walled Off Hotel, opened in 2017 in Bethlehem, Palestine, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Balfour Declaration. The themed hotel is a means of expression and space of interaction, capable of allowing guests/visitors the experience of staying in a work of art.
